Mivan, the leading fit out and bespoke joinery specialists, has showcased its commitment to developing its people by joining The 5% Club, an industry led initiative focused on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates and sponsored students.

The 5% Club, initiated by Leo Quinn, Group CEO of Balfour Beatty in 2013, is a movement of more than 700 employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to become more employable and create meaningful careers. Companies joining The 5% Club commit to raising the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal programmes to 5% of their total workforce within five years. Members are also asked to publicly report their progress in their Annual Report. Existing members range from SMEs to FTSEs and cover a number of diverse industries, from engineering through to the legal sector.

Mivan recognises the importance for creating opportunities for young people and have done for years. Joining The 5% Club is a natural endorsement of how Mivan develops young talent. Each year around 10% of the workforce is made up of Apprentices, Student Placements and Graduates with many going on to have long, developing, and successful careers.

The Navigate Programme is Mivan’s early careers entry point. This provides a structured pathway to support young people from the beginning of their career. The Apprentice Programme recruits ten new apprentices each year and provides dedicated mentoring throughout the whole apprenticeship. The Student Placement and Graduate pathways provide opportunities for up to fifteen young people each year across a breadth of disciplines – design, estimating, quantity surveying, production and construction management.

Karen Anderson, HR Manager said, “Mivan understands that supporting early careers is vital to the continuing expansion of our business and the construction industry. We offer a structured early careers programme through The Navigate Programme which provides career pathways for apprentices, students, and graduates. We are delighted to join the 5% Club and work in collaboration with other organisations dedicated to providing employment, training, and career development opportunities.”

Gill Cronin, Director of Operations of The 5% Club said, “We’re delighted to welcome Mivan Ltd. into membership. The 5% Club provides a fantastic network of HR professionals, sharing and learning from each other. All our members share an ethos of creating a skilled workforce through ‘earn and learn’ development programmes, helping people develop meaningful career paths.”

The Navigate Programme recruitment begins shortly seeking Student Placement and Graduates. Over the next couple of months Mivan will attend Ulster University and local colleges to attend career fairs, present to classes of students and advertise opportunities on their digital platforms. The Apprentice pathway recruitment begins at the start of each year with visits to local schools and hosting an Apprentice Open Day. All applicants are interviewed but only some are invited back for a practical assessment. The best applicants are offered roles and begin a month before college begins. Over the next three years Mivan will offer over 60 opportunities to young people.
