Troy Scoops Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2021 Title

A South Eastern Regional College (SERC) Apprentice has been named Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2021.

Troy McConville (19) from Bangor, is currently a Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprentice at the College’s Newtownards Campus, employed by Vaughan Engineering Services in Newtownabbey.

The Award, presented by the Electrical Contractors Association, recognises Electrical Apprentices from across Northern Ireland who are nominated by their employers through a testimonial submission followed by an interview.

Troy said, “I am delighted to be recognised with the Award for Electrical Apprentice of the Year.   I have progressed from Level 2 to the Level 3 Apprenticeship with SERC and really enjoy the career path I have chosen. I would certainly recommend the apprenticeship route as I have great support from my tutors and from my employer.”

Along with his Electrical Apprentice of the Year title, the young man is enjoying success as a decathlete, competing in 10 events over two-day competitions.   Ranked 1st in the UK and 7th in Europe (Under 20’s), Troy currently represents London Windsor and competes for Windsor Slough, Eaton and Hounslow Athletic Club.  Over the last year, he has competed in 5 major events including the IAAF in Arona, Tenerife where he came 5th and the European Athletics Promotion in Hexham in June where he finished first and scored an overall points total of 6,957 competing in: 100m long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.

Speaking about his sporting success, he said, “My father, Brendan McConville, was on the NI Commonwealth Games team and competed in Melbourne in 2006 and I guess in our house we have always been encouraged to enjoy sport and competition. ”
