Statement following Secretary of State’s confirmation that there will not be an election in December

4th Nov 2022

Following confirmation from the Secretary of State that there will not be an election in December, Gillian McAuley, President, Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NI Chamber) said:

“At NI Chamber, we welcome the confirmation provided by the Secretary of State this morning that there will not be an election in December.

“We need to see an Executive restored as soon as possible. However, as we continue without local ministers, stability must be restored to our public finances and tangible progress made on the outstanding issues with the EU on the Northern Ireland Protocol. Crucially, we must all work together to get to grips with the impact of the energy crisis in Northern Ireland to ensure that our businesses and households are not left behind.

“Every effort should be redoubled in order to reach lasting resolutions on all of these issues with the sense of urgency this challenging environment demands.”
