NI Chamber responds to Chancellor’s update

5th Nov 2020

Measures welcome however no amount of government support can compensate for an open, fully-functioning economy

Commenting on the Chancellor’s update today, Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Ian Henry said:

“A further extension of the furlough scheme and more generous grants for the self-employed are important steps in protecting jobs over the coming months.

“The confirmation that this support applies to devolved administrations, with an additional £400m in upfront funding for Northern Ireland, will give businesses some reassurance over an uncertain winter.

“However policy makers both at Westminster and Stormont must realise that no amount of government support can compensate for an open, fully-functioning economy. Developing a sustainable framework for the safe operation of businesses from all sectors should be a priority.”
