Belfast City Airport has announced it is currently accepting applications for its prestigious ‘High Flyers’ Apprenticeship Scheme, providing a unique opportunity for individuals to join the Airport’s fire service.

This initiative offers successful applicants the opportunity to gain invaluable on-the-job experience and qualifications in various areas, including aviation firefighting tactics and techniques, LGV advanced driving of major foam appliances, hose deployment, branch handling, working at heights, confined spaces, advanced medical casualty care, and the wearing of breathing apparatus.

The highly coveted programme has proven extremely popular since its launch in 2014, reinforcing the growing demand for specialised training and employment opportunities in Northern Ireland.

Jessica McCormick, Firefighter at Belfast City Airport, said:

“The High Flyers programme affords individuals from across Northern Ireland the rare opportunity to develop a lifelong career underpinned by unique experiences and a fantastic tight-knit team.

“As a former apprentice, I am truly grateful for the training and support provided to me throughout my career at Belfast City Airport and would encourage anyone considering taking the leap to apply – the sky really is the limit!”

Last November saw five trainee firefighters, the largest cohort since the programme was established, successfully complete their apprenticeship to secure full-time employment within the Airport’s fire service.

Seamus Mac Mahon, Chief Fire Officer at Belfast City Airport, commented:

“As an industry leader, Belfast City Airport is dedicated to nurturing local talent and we recognise the demand for roles and opportunities like this in Northern Ireland.

“Our apprenticeship programme reflects our commitment to investing in the future of our community by providing people with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in the dynamic field of aviation firefighting.

“Throughout the past number of years, we have been privileged to have had many talented firefighters join us at Belfast City Airport, and we look forward to welcoming a new intake of apprentices who are ready to grasp this opportunity with both hands.”

The ‘High Flyers’ Apprenticeship offers a structured and challenging curriculum, designed to equip participants with the skills required for a successful career in aviation firefighting.

The programme not only focuses on technical proficiency, but also emphasises the importance of safety, teamwork, and leadership.

Belfast City Airport’s Fire and Rescue Service currently consists of a team of 36 individuals, who work to maintain and enhance the Airport’s extremely rigorous safety measures in addition to providing First Aid to those across the Airport site when required.

Applications are open until 31st January, and interested candidates are encouraged to visit for more information on eligibility criteria and the application process.
