After completing a Batchelors degree at Brigham Young University in Utah, USA, Karen Johnson (44) from Lisburn, came to SERC to study a Higher-Level Apprenticeship (HLA) believing it was the best fit for her to learn on the job and gain a qualification.
Karen recently had great success coming 11th throughout the island of Ireland in the Level 5 Diploma in Accounting Technician exam. She commented saying, “I felt a bit of pressure to be placed again this year, having been placed 13th last year. I found the exams much tougher this year, so I was surprised but delighted when I discovered I had placed 11thGaining the qualification and being placed highly, confirmed that all the long days and nights of hard work and study had paid off.”
“It’s definitely a confidence booster, I had struggled with questioning my abilities to be an accounting technician. When you put your mind to something, and dig deep, great things are possible. If doubts creep in, I can remind myself I didn’t just pass the exams, I smashed them.”
Speaking about her lecturers at SERC, Karen said “The lecturers were invaluable in helping the whole class be prepared, regularly using past papers in their teaching which helped connect the textbook theory to practical examples found in the exam questions. They were always very approachable and willing to help at any time during our studies, in and outside of the classroom.”
She added, “I rate my experience at SERC very highly. I really looked forward to my classes every Tuesday, I was always greeted with a friendly atmosphere. My tutors and fellow students provided me with great support during my time at the college.”
Karen concluded, “I would highly recommend the HLA route for anyone considering the Accounting Technician qualification. The combination of gaining work and education concurrently is hard to beat.”
