What is NI Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey?
The Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) is the UK’s largest and longest-running independent survey of business sentiment. Founded in 1989 and comprising of around 5,000 respondents each quarter, it provides unparalleled insight into how UK businesses are performing from quarter to quarter.
How often is this survey conducted?
Each quarter, we ask our membership to complete our QES to capture real-time business sentiment. Each survey includes a set of consistent core questions, along with a few additional timely questions that change quarterly to reflect policy developments.
What makes QES unique?
It’s the longest-running independent survey of business sentiment, providing a powerful snapshot of both local and national economic conditions that are closely monitored by policymakers, including the UK Treasury and the Bank of England.
It’s viewed as the leading economic indicator, often detecting major changes in the economy before other official statistics or surveys.
QES also provides a unique and unrivalled insight into business sentiment in Northern Ireland relative to other UK regions.
How can I contribute?
It’s open to any UK business that wants to contribute. It should take no longer than five minutes to complete.

It’s used at all levels to understand economic trends, challenges and opportunities, feeding into national debates and decisions on economic policy and business environment improvements.
