AI for Northern Ireland businesses and professionals: Why you can’t afford to ignore it

12th Nov 2025

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform how you work; that’s undeniable. But the question is: Are you ready for it?

AI is already making a real difference for professionals across all sectors. While some are still exploring what’s possible, others are already using AI tools daily to work faster, produce better results, and advance their careers.

“AI, like most transformative technologies, grows gradually, then arrives suddenly.”  – Reid Hoffman, cofounder of LinkedIn and Inflection AI, partner at Greylock Partners, and author

Recent research from Google’s AI Works 2025 Report shows that professionals using AI are saving over 122 hours annually. Meanwhile, the UK’s SME Digital Adoption Taskforce found that businesses embracing digital innovation see revenue increases of nearly 15%, and the professionals driving that change are positioning themselves as indispensable.

The reality check

Many people and businesses are still talking about AI rather than using it. The hesitation is understandable. AI can seem complex, expensive, or designed only for those in tech roles.

But that perception is outdated. Today’s AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are accessible and immediately practical for almost any role.

Recent research by British Chambers of Commerce found that almost half (46%) of B2B service firms, those in sectors such as finance, law and marketing, are using AI. Around 60% say they’re using AI for content creation and knowledge work. That compares to just 26% of B2C firms and manufacturers.

The research also found that for SMEs, many feel like they aren’t using the available technology to its full potential. Just 11% of respondents reported using technology to a ‘great extent’ to automate or streamline operations, while 42% say ‘to some extent’, 29% ‘to a minimal extent’, and 14% ‘not at all.

There’s a significant gap between having access to AI tools and knowing how to use them effectively, or using them at all.

The benefits of AI for Northern Ireland businesses and professionals

This is what the reality of AI adoption can look like:

  • If you’re in marketing: You can create compelling content in half the time, using AI to research strategies, draft campaign plans, and personalise outreach that actually converts.
  • If you’re in operations: You can automate repetitive admin tasks, analyse performance data in minutes instead of hours, and identify opportunities that were previously invisible.
  • If you work in customer service: You can provide faster, more accurate responses while AI handles routine enquiries, allowing you to focus on more complex situations where your expertise truly makes a difference.
  • If you’re in leadership: You can make better decisions based on AI-gathered insights, spot trends before others, and plan strategy with data that otherwise could take weeks to compile.

“This is a time when you should be getting benefits [from AI] and hope that your competitors are just playing around and experimenting.”  – Erik Brynjolfsson, professor at Stanford University and director of the Digital Economy Lab at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence (HAI)

Skills, not software

McKinsey found that 92% of companies plan to invest more in AI over the next three years. This creates enormous opportunity for people who build and improve their AI skills now.

The biggest mistake some make is thinking that having access to ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot is enough. Your employer might provide these tools, but that means nothing if you don’t know how to use them effectively.

Successful AI adoption requires role-specific training that shows you how to embed AI into your actual work. For example, a marketing professional needs different AI skills than someone in operations, while a team leader requires different capabilities than a front-line employee.

Generic AI training fails because it’s theoretical. Effective AI training succeeds because it’s practical, relevant, and immediately applicable to your real work challenges.

The time to gain, or enhance, your AI skills is now

AI adoption follows a predictable pattern: Early adopters gain significant advantages; fast followers capture remaining opportunities, and late adopters struggle to catch up.
