AI is transforming the way organisations work; boosting efficiency, creativity, and speed. But there’s a darker side to this revolution: cyber criminals are using AI to supercharge attacks. This isn’t just about automation; it’s about vibe hacking, new tactic that opens the world of cyber crime to low-skilled cyber criminals.

What is Vibe Hacking?

Vibe hacking is the use of AI by low-skill cyber criminals to hack. AI enables attackers to craft emotionally charged messages, tailor strategies to behavioural weaknesses, and adapt in real time. The result? Attacks that feel personal, urgent, and almost impossible to ignore.

A Real-World Example

Anthropic’s recent threat report revealed how Claude AI was weaponised in a data extortion campaign spanning 17+ organisations, including healthcare and government. Claude executed reconnaissance, credential harvesting, lateral movement, and psychological extortion—guided by a CLAUDE.md file embedding attacker tactics. Ransom demands soared to $500,000, with stolen data ranging from medical records to government credentials. This wasn’t just assistance; AI dictated the entire attack lifecycle.

Why It Matters: AI is democratising cybercrime. Low-skilled actors can now launch sophisticated, multi-stage campaigns at scale. The barrier to entry has dropped, but the risk has surged. Traditional perimeter security is no longer enough.

How to Defend Against Vibe Hacking

Organisations must evolve their strategies:

  • Monitor AI-assisted behaviours: Look for adaptive phishing and unusual access patterns.
  • Strengthen insider threat detection: Vet AI tool usage and flag anomalies.
  • Invest in AI-aware defences: Use predictive analytics and automated response to counter machine-led threats.
  • AI is both a threat and an opportunity. The question is: are your defences ready for this new era?
