At the MAC, the belief is that the arts should be for everyone. This commitment was recently recognised when the organisation was honoured with the Positive Futures Welcome Award – a distinction celebrating its dedication to creating a space where every person feels valued, respected, and at home.
This award is not merely a badge of honour; it is a reflection of the efforts of the MAC’s dedicated team, who consistently go above and beyond to ensure that visitors of all abilities can enjoy performances, exhibitions, and events. Over the years, the MAC has proudly welcomed carers and individuals supported by Positive Futures’ Family Matters Shared Lives Service to its annual Christmas Show. These special relaxed performances are thoughtfully adapted to meet the needs of people with a learning disability, acquired brain injury, or autism.
Julie McDowell, Service Manager at Positive Futures, shared how the MAC’s staff approach has made a lasting impact:
“At our most recent visit, people we support were so grateful for the warm welcome and excellent treatment they received. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who showed respect and patience to everyone.”
The MAC team’s thoughtful and considerate approach is a source of pride for the organisation. From the moment visitors walk through the doors, the aim is to ensure they feel they belong – no matter who they are or what support they might need.
What the Award Means to the MAC
The Positive Futures Welcome Award is given to organisations that create truly inclusive and welcoming environments. It serves as a reminder that small actions – a kind word, an understanding gesture, a willingness to adapt – can make a significant difference.
Lisa McGinley, Director at the MAC, expressed it best:
“Inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do at the MAC. We’re really pleased to receive this award, as it shows our commitment to making sure everyone feels welcome and valued. We believe the arts should be for everyone, and we’re proud to be recognised for the kindness and respect our team shows to all our visitors.”
Looking Ahead
The MAC remains committed to its ongoing efforts to make the venue an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone. It is a privilege to be recognised, and the MAC is grateful to be part of a wider community of organisations working towards the shared goal of inclusivity and respect.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to Positive Futures for acknowledging these efforts, and to the amazing visitors who bring energy and vibrancy to the MAC every day. The MAC team looks forward to welcoming everyone again soon.
