The funding supported inclusive events, including bowling and a private cinema screening, giving families a safe, welcoming space to connect, have fun and build confidence.

Autism NI has received a £1,500 grant from Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme to help tackle social isolation among autistic adults, children and their families in Lisburn.

With the funding, the charity recently organised a series of inclusive social events, including bowling and a private cinema screening, designed to encourage connection in a safe and supportive environment while boosting emotional wellbeing and self-confidence. One hundred adults and children attended the event, coming together to support more than 30 local families while sharing fun moments in a relaxed setting.

As Northern Ireland’s longest-serving autism charity, Autism NI provides specialist support services to more than 35,000 autistic people across the region. A recent survey carried out by its Lisburn Support Group Committee highlighted growing levels of social isolation among members, with respondents emphasising the importance of creative and recreational activities for maintaining wellbeing.

“Whole families and autistic young people can experience days where they are unable to leave home due to emotional dysregulation and often feel misunderstood by society and even loved ones,” explained Kiely Lawlor, Support Group Co-ordinator at Autism NI. “This can have a significant impact on relationships and everyday family life.

“Our Support Group identified the need for inclusive, pro-social activities where autistic individuals and their families can feel comfortable, supported and understood. Events like cinema trips and group outings provide a safe space to connect, have fun and build confidence.

“We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen by the local community for Tesco’s Stronger Starts funding. It means so much to know that people recognise the importance of creating inclusive opportunities for autistic individuals and their families, and this support has allowed us to make a real difference in Lisburn.”

The Stronger Starts scheme, in partnership with the Groundwork charity, aims to support many Northern Ireland community projects and good causes.

Claire De Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “We’re delighted that we can help charities such as Autism NI. Stronger Starts invites our customers to use their blue tokens to vote for local schemes they feel will benefit their community and it’s so good to see the impact that the funding makes.”

NI shoppers can support their local schools and charities by dropping the Tesco blue token they receive at checkout into the relevant voting box as they leave the store.
