A Tesco colleague from Cookstown is celebrating after winning three gold medals at the Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games 2026.
Callum Neill, 27, who works as a Customer Assistant on checkouts at Tesco Cookstown Broadfield Superstore, took home gold in the 100m, relay and long jump events at the Games in June.
The Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games is the largest inclusive sporting event on the isle of Ireland, bringing together more than 1,200 athletes to compete across a range of sports. Events are divided into divisions based on ability, giving athletes the opportunity to compete and celebrate their achievements.
For Callum, who was attending the Games for the first time, the experience was one he will never forget. He said: “I’m really proud of the experience. It was amazing to take part of the competition and I’m looking forward to seeing what other opportunities come around.”
Callum is part of the Eagles Special Olympics Club, based in Coalisland, Co. Tyrone and had been practising since January in preparation for the Games. He is now taking a short break before returning to weekly training sessions at his sports club in September.
Callum added: “My Tesco colleagues have been lovely. They sent me messages of support, encouraging me to take part and then helped me celebrate my success when I returned to work.”
Tesco Cookstown’s sporting star brought his medals to the store, where they now feature on the store’s Board of Achievements, celebrating colleagues’ important milestones.
The Store Manager at Tesco Cookstown Broadfield Superstore said that colleagues at the store are delighted for Callum.
Glen Kitson, Store Manager at Tesco Cookstown Broadfield Superstore, said: “All of us are in awe of Callum’s incredible achievements. He shows great commitment, whether he is on the track or working in Tesco, and it has been wonderful to see his hard work recognised with three gold medals.”
