Network Assets Director at NIE Networks, Randal Gilbert, has been named as the first-ever recipient of the Green Legacy Award at the 2024 All-Ireland Sustainability Awards.

Held on Thursday, 24th October at the La Mon Hotel & Country Club in Belfast, the awards, now in their second year, celebrated businesses and individuals who are making a lasting impact on sustainability across the island of Ireland. Dublin-based FoodCloud was named as Overall Sustainable Business of the Year, one of four awards that the social enterprise won on the evening. This year, the Green Legacy Award was introduced to acknowledge individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sustainability over an extended period.

With an impressive career spanning over 40 years at NIE Networks, Randal was deemed a worthy winner by the judges. Throughout his tenure in engineering and sustainability-focused roles at NIE, Randal has developed a deep understanding of the sustainability journey required for organisations. In 2019, he was instrumental in establishing a dedicated Sustainability team, collaborating closely with the new Sustainability Senior Manager to influence policy and pioneer innovative practices that create a more sustainable future for all.

As well as leading transformational projects within NIE Networks, Randal is an advisor to the board of EnergyCloud, a sustainability initiative aiming to use surplus renewable energy to help tackle fuel poverty in Northern Ireland.
