AWARE NI is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of its popular event, Giant Steps, along the stunning Causeway Coastline on Saturday, 17 May 2025. Now in its fourth year, this inspiring sponsored walk invites participants to complete 7, 13, or 20 miles while raising awareness of mental health, fighting stigma, and funding AWARE NI’s crucial services.
Giant Steps has become a key community event, bringing together individuals and teams dedicated to improving mental well-being. Last year alone, the event raised nearly £60,000 to support AWARE NI’s network of peer-led Support Groups—vital lifelines for those experiencing depression, anxiety, and bipolar. These groups, meeting weekly across North, South, East, and West Belfast, provide a safe and welcoming space for anyone affected by mental health challenges. With each group costing £163 per week to operate, participants are encouraged to pledge £100 in sponsorship to help sustain this essential support.
This year AWARE is delighted to partner with Cookstown based Bell Contracts as sponsor of the Giant Steps 2025. Bell Contracts Social Value Manager, Kerry Sweeney, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are incredibly proud to support Giant Steps this year. Mental health affects us all, and AWARE NI’s work is crucial for creating a more compassionate and supportive society. This event is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference while enjoying one of Northern Ireland’s most breath-taking landscapes.”
Whether you’re an experienced hiker or simply looking for a meaningful day out, Giant Steps offers routes to suit all abilities. Leigh Osborne, Head of Fundraising at AWARE NI, emphasised the importance of the event: “Giant Steps is more than just a walking challenge— every pound raised helps us challenge mental health stigma and ensures our Support Groups continue providing a safe and supportive space for those in need. We can’t wait to welcome new and returning participants this year!”
For many, Giant Steps is more than just a fundraising event—it’s an opportunity to come together and make a difference. Mark McCune, who took part in last year’s walk, is excited to return for 2025. “Supporting local mental health services is something really close to my heart, so taking part in Giant Steps last year meant a lot to me,” said Mark. “The atmosphere on the day was amazing, the scenery was absolutely stunning, and the craic with everyone along the way made it even better. I didn’t think twice about signing up again this year!”
Registration is now open at aware-ni.org/giant. Invite your friends, family, or colleagues to step up for a meaningful cause, enjoy the scenic beauty of the Causeway Coast, and be part of the movement to empower mental well-being across Northern Ireland.
