Achieving Northern Ireland’s renewable energy and net zero ambitions requires a whole energy system and whole society approach, underpinned by collaboration, innovation and shared commitment across all sectors.

SONI, Northern Ireland’s electricity Transmission System Operator, has published its new Stakeholder Engagement Strategy 2027–2032, which sets out how the organisation will work alongside partners to help deliver a more secure, affordable and cleaner energy system for everyone in Northern Ireland.

SONI’s Corporate Strategy 2025–2031, Meeting Northern Ireland’s energy needs, today and in the future, sets out the organisation’s broader and more ambitious role in supporting the transformation of the power system while continuing to operate it safely, securely and reliably. The principles and approach laid out in the new Engagement Strategy will support delivery of the organisation’s overarching objectives by embedding meaningful engagement in how SONI plans and delivers its work over the years ahead.

The new 5-year Engagement Strategy builds on SONI’s previous approach and reflects valuable feedback received from stakeholders.

It is underpinned by a clear framework focused on early and purposeful planning, transparency about the parameters of influence, and engagement that is proportionate and tailored to stakeholders’ needs. SONI will also demonstrate how stakeholder feedback shapes its thinking and decision-making, while continuing to improve how it engages.

SONI recognises that it must balance diverse and, at times, competing stakeholder priorities. While it may not always be possible to meet every stakeholder ask, the organisation has reaffirmed its commitment to listening carefully, engaging openly and explaining clearly how decisions are made in the wider public interest.

Alan Campbell, SONI Chief Executive, said:

“Transforming Northern Ireland’s energy system cannot be achieved by a single organisation or sector. It requires strong collaboration across government, industry, regulators, communities and wider society.

“Our new Stakeholder Engagement Strategy will help ensure that meaningful engagement is embedded in how we plan, decide and deliver. We are committed to being open about the constraints within which we operate, to listening to the expertise and perspectives of our stakeholders, and to demonstrating how their feedback helps shape informed and balanced decisions.

“I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the development of this strategy and for their ongoing constructive engagement with SONI. Your input is vital as we work together to deliver a more secure, affordable and sustainable energy future for everyone in Northern Ireland.”

The Stakeholder Engagement Strategy 2027–2032 sets out the principles, approach and delivery framework for SONI’s engagement over the next five years, supporting the organisation’s role in meeting Northern Ireland’s energy needs today and in the future.
