Group Logistics Director of the Henderson Group, Pat McGarry, has been recognised at the annual Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards for his long and distinguished service to the industry.
He was presented with the Transport Personality of the Year award, sponsored by Stena Line, at a glittering ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in South Belfast, an event attended by almost 600 guests from all sectors of the transport and logistics industry and compered by TV personality Sarah Travers and Actor and Comedian Tim McGarry.
Organised by the Hillsborough based publishers of Export & Freight magazine, 4SM (NI) Ltd, the event, returning after a two year absence because of the Covid-19 pandemic, is Ireland’s premier platform of recognition for those operating in the industry; it celebrates all the hard work, determination, and ongoing investment that make the industry what it is today.
Throughout his career of almost four decades in the logistics sector, Pat has been a strong and proactive leader, introducing and directing many innovative large-scale projects to streamline processes, reduce environmental impact and improve working conditions in the Henderson Group, the business he has served for the last 25 years, and from which he plans to retire, early next year.
Today, thanks to concepts born from his ingenuity, the company now has the most technologically advanced and efficient warehouse facility in the country and one that is held in high regard as the epitome of best practice.
Pat, who has sat on the Board of Directors at Hendersons for 23 years, has also been responsible for a number of innovations within the company’s logistics fleet. Most notably, he introduced the first static floor double deck trailer to Northern Ireland in conjunction with FG Wilsons. He has played a key role in driving the logistics division, to both boost customer service to retailers as well as managing the company’s operational cost base in an effective way.
Extremely focused and insightful, he looks for ways to improve processes through challenging the “norms” whilst encouraging his team to strive for excellence. He is natural in his approach and extremely engaging, which has resulted in strong partnerships being built over many years.
Pat has acted as a mentor and leader for not only work colleagues, but his family too, in all aspects of life, devoting his spare time in encouraging his family to excel. Evidence of his mentorship can be seen in his son, who has been inspired to build his own career in the logistics industry.
Martin Agnew, Joint Managing Director at Henderson Group commented on the recognition, saying, “We are thrilled for Pat to receive this award as it is truly deserved. In the 25 years that Pat has worked for our business, leading the logistics function for 22 of those 25 years, the business has grown exponentially both in scale and in profitability, and this has been in no small part due to Pat’s far-sighted vision and plans, brought to fruition day and daily, by the high-performing team he has built.”
