THE Irish News and its sister printing company Interpress NI have been shortlisted for a number of prizes in the 2025 Newspaper Awards.
The awards, widely regarded as a benchmark of excellence within the industry, celebrate outstanding achievements and innovations across various aspects of newspaper publishing.
The Irish News is on the shortlist for the Regional Daily Newspaper of the Year award, which the Belfast-based publication won last year.
For the first time, The Irish News Young News Readers Media Project has been shortlisted for Niche Market Newspaper of the Year at the 2025 Newspaper Awards.
Sponsored by EY, Simplyfruit, Translink, and St. Mary’s University College, The Irish News Young News Readers Project is an eight-week educational initiative engaging over 7,000 Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils across Northern Ireland. Each week, participants receive a School Edition Newspaper, bringing news to young people news in an age-appropriate format.
The project is also supported by the West Belfast Partnership Board, which funds the participation of Irish and English medium schools in west Belfast.
Interpress NI, which not only prints The Irish News but also the Belfast Telegraph, News Letter and a wide range of daily and weekly titles, is on the shortlist for Regional Newspaper Printer of the Year.
Chris Sherrard, editor-in-chief of The Irish News, welcomed the announcement, saying: “Making the shortlist for newspaper of the year again underscores the brilliant efforts of our team of journalists who work tirelessly to produce the best-quality content each and every day.
“I am also delighted to see our Young News Readers Project being recognised in this way with a nomination for niche product.
“The scheme is one we are particularly proud of. By focusing on topics that directly impact young people, the project offers a unique perspective on news while developing key reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
“We are incredibly grateful to the schools, teachers, and pupils who take part each year, as well as our sponsors for their ongoing support.”
