Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, has launched two important Place Shaping Reports that will help guide future regeneration, investment and service delivery across Glengormley District Electoral Area and the communities of Monkstown and New Mossley.
The reports, launched at Mossley Mill on 11 June, represent a significant milestone in the Council’s commitment to community planning and place-based regeneration, placing local people at the centre of shaping the future of their neighbourhoods.
The Glengormley Place Shaping Pilot focused on one of the Borough’s most strategically important urban areas. Home to more than 21,500 residents, Glengormley serves as both a major residential community and a key gateway between Belfast and the wider Borough. Located at the intersection of significant transport routes and neighbouring the major employment hub of Mallusk, Glengormley plays a vital role in supporting regional economic growth. The report highlights opportunities to improve connectivity, strengthen public spaces, support housing-led regeneration and build on the area’s existing assets.
The Monkstown and New Mossley evaluation report examines the impact of pioneering Place Shaping projects launched by the Council and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive in 2016 and 2017.
In Monkstown, the original pilot identified opportunities to tackle housing need, improve connectivity, enhance green spaces and support the regeneration of neighbourhood centres, while building on the area’s strong community spirit.
In New Mossley, the project focused on improving infrastructure, housing, public spaces and community facilities, helping to support initiatives including new social housing, enhanced green spaces, better transport connections and stronger community networks. The evaluation highlights the positive impact of community-led planning and identifies priorities for future investment to support regeneration, wellbeing and sustainable growth across both areas.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Alison Bennington, welcomed the publication of the reports saying, “These reports provide a clear vision for the future of Glengormley, Monkstown and New Mossley. They reflect the priorities of local people and demonstrate what can be achieved when communities, partners and public bodies work together to shape better places for everyone.”
The findings align closely with the Council’s “Love Living Here” Community Plan and wider strategic objectives for the Borough, supporting ambitions around people, place, prosperity and planet.
