The Open University has appointed Michael Bower as Principal and Director of The Open University in Ireland following a competitive recruitment process. He will take up the role on 30 March 2026.
Currently Deputy Director of Student Success and Strategy, Bower brings more than a decade of leadership experience within the organisation, during which he has played a central role in developing strategic partnerships with higher education institutions, employers and government bodies across Northern Ireland and Ireland.

He succeeds John D’Arcy, who will retire at the end of March after 15 years as Director.

As Director, Bower will lead the university’s work across the island of Ireland, focusing on expanding access to flexible higher education, developing research partnerships and strengthening collaboration with industry and the skills sector to meet workforce needs.

Commenting on his appointment, Bower said he is committed to building on the university’s strong partnerships and continuing to widen participation in higher education.
The Open University supports thousands of students across Ireland each year through flexible distance learning, working closely with employers and policymakers to help address skills shortages and create new opportunities for learners at every stage of life.
