McQuillan Companies Launches 2025 Sustainability Report: “Diverse Services, One Sustainable Future”

McQuillan Companies has launched its 2025 Sustainability Report today, showcasing a year of transformative progress in its commitment to environmental responsibility, innovation, and community investment throughout its operations in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Titled “Diverse Services, One Sustainable Future,” the report highlights major achievements across the group’s three sustainability pillars: People, Planet, and Product.

Key highlights from the 2025 report include:

  • 98.2% of electricity used now sourced from renewable energy
  • 11.3% reduction in Scope 1 emissions since 2020, with progress toward a 50% reduction target by 2040
  • 70% recycling rate achieved at the McQuillan Environmental Materials Recovery Facility — six years ahead of Northern Ireland’s 2030 target
  • 30% of company-owned land to be protected for biodiversity by 2030, under the global 30×30 framework.

“Sustainability is not just something we do — it’s part of who we are. This report reflects the hard work, innovation, and values of our teams across all divisions,” said Stephen McQuillan, Director. “Whether it’s investing in cleaner fuels, supporting student apprenticeships, or protecting local biodiversity, we’re taking meaningful action to secure a more sustainable future.”

As part of its long-term roadmap to Net Zero, McQuillan Companies continues to innovate with upcoming projects including:

  • A new Thermal Treatment Plant in Antrim, expected to save 500+ tonnes of CO₂e annually
  • Expansion of Warm Mix Asphalt and increased use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) to reduce emissions in road construction.
  • On going training and education has resulted in 18 staff members now being Carbon Conscious trained and 7 accredited. as Carbon Literate

The report also emphasises McQuillan Companies’ social impact — from its charity partnerships with the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity and the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, to its continued support for student-athletes at Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University.
