South Eastern Regional College (SERC) hosted visitors from Mozambique at the College’s Bangor Campus recently to share their expertise on project-based learning pedagogy and how its application improves student transversal skills, engagement and outcomes.
Tommy Martin, Principal & Chief Executive at SERC, welcomed His Excellency (HE) Dr Leo Jamal Secretary of State for Technical and Professional Education at the Ministry of Education and Culture along with Kauxique Maganlal, Advisor to the Minister of Education and Culture for the area of Technologies and ICT. The visitors were in Northern Ireland for the British Council’s annual UK Technical and Vocational Education & Training (TVET) Policy Seminar.
The theme of this year’s seminar is TVET in a rapidly changing world. The programme will look at new approaches to training and learning, informed by a range of factors including technological advances; demand for greater flexibility, personalisation and inclusion; growing awareness of our impact on the environment.
Aguinaldo Namburete, British Council, Country Director Mozambique said, “We are very pleased and grateful to SERC for hosting us today and for giving us the opportunity to witness first hand, and in context, the inspiring work the college has undertaken with Mozambican TVET institutions. The Project-Based Learning training provided to Mozambican teachers will have a lasting impact, benefiting generations of TVET learners in one of the most vital sectors of the Mozambican economy.”
As part of the British Council’s Going Global Partnership Programme, the International team at SERC has delivered a mentoring project – working with three partner TVET colleges in Mozambique and the State Secretariat for Professional Education (SEETP) – designed to embed soft skills in the tourism and hospitality sectors. SERC shared its leading project-based learning approach to soft skills development with: Instituto Comercial de Maputo, Maputo city; Instituto Industrial e Commercial Eduardo Mondlane, Inhambane city; and Instituto Medio Profissional, Sao Francisco de Assis, Maputo province.
