The iconic CAFRE Greenmount Campus in Antrim is set to undergo a major transformation, ushering in a new era of educational excellence, cutting-edge facilities, and sustainable energy solutions. This ambitious redevelopment project will breathe new life into the historic campus, blending modern architecture with the rich heritage of the site’s landscape and buildings.

The redevelopment spans 3.7 hectares within the picturesque 18-hectare grounds of Greenmount Campus. This includes the demolition of outdated structures such as Fulton Hall, Boyd Hall, the Technology Building, and modular student accommodations. In their place, the project will introduce new, purpose-built facilities that cater to both students and staff, including modern accommodation, state-of-the-art teaching spaces, a new conference centre, and upgraded staff offices. The new structures will be integrated into the existing landscape, which includes Grade B1 listed buildings like the Manor House and the Principal’s Lodge.

In keeping with the campus’s historic charm, the redevelopment will feature thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces including communal courtyards, gardens and barbeque areas and include sustainable and renewable energy measures which will significantly reduce the campus’s carbon footprint.

The redevelopment will be completed in three phases, ensuring a smooth transition for current students and staff while minimising disruptions to the campus’s daily activities.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly has welcomed the announcement commenting: “The Greenmount Campus was established as an Agricultural College in 1912 and has evolved into a centre of excellence in agricultural education. This redevelopment honours the campus’s legacy while equipping it for the future, ensuring that Greenmount remains a beacon of innovation and learning for generations to come.”

Chairperson of Antrim and Newtownabbey Planning Committee Councillor Jeannie Archibald-Brown commented; “I am delighted these plans have been approved making the facility a 21st century state of the art campus for students choosing to study within our Borough.”
