Are you aged 11–18, living in the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough and ready to build new skills, boost your confidence and improve your career prospects? The Duke of Edinburgh Legacy Bursary Scheme is back for its fifth year, offering an exciting opportunity for local young people to access up to £1,000 to support their personal and professional development.

Delivered by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, this unique initiative is separate from the traditional Duke of Edinburgh Award and is designed specifically to help young people overcome financial or social barriers. The scheme empowers participants to pursue passions and hobbies, develop talents and unlock future opportunities.

This year, 20 bursaries are available and successful applicants will take part in a 12-week personal development programme running from September to December. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and practical life skills through engaging sessions covering:

  • Volunteering
  • Drugs and Alcohol Awareness
  • Good Relations
  • Money Management
  • Sports Activities
  • Mental Health Awareness
  • Digital Technology
  • Animal Welfare
  • Fitness and Nutrition
  • Photography

The journey begins in August with a fun and engaging team-building event, giving participants the opportunity to meet others and build friendships before the programme starts.

Young people who complete at least 80% of the programme will then be eligible to apply for a £1,000 bursary to purchase up to £500 for equipment and £500 for tuition or training.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick said, “I am incredibly proud to see the Duke of Edinburgh Legacy Bursary Scheme reach its fifth year. This programme continues to create meaningful opportunities for our young people, helping them build confidence, learn new skills and invest in their future. As Chair of the Working Group, I have seen first-hand the positive impact it can have, and I would encourage all eligible young people to apply.”

Applications and nominations are now open and will close on Monday 8 June at 4pm. To nominate or apply visit antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/dukeofedinburgh
