Cleaver Fulton Rankin is pleased to be the first independent law firm in Northern Ireland to sign the Greener Litigation Pledge.

The Greener Litigation Pledge is a mission statement outlining practical steps that lawyers can take to reduce the environmental impact of their dispute resolution practices and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Pledge was launched in 2020 by Mischon de Reya and has since grown to over 100 signatories including other leading international law firms, barrister chambers and legal technology companies.

Some of the practical steps outlined in the Greener Litigation Pledge include promoting the use of electronic correspondence and ebundles over hard copies; making use of technology to conduct remote meetings/ hearings; avoiding unnecessary travel; walking, cycling or using public transport to court where feasible; using sustainable suppliers and renewable energy where possible; and encouraging others to support the Greener Litigation Pledge.

Signing the Greener Litigation Pledge is the latest measure Cleaver Fulton Rankin has introduced to its Responsible Business Programme in order to minimise its carbon footprint. In 2022, the law firm signed Business in the Community NI’s Climate Action Pledge, making a commitment to achieving a 50% reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2030. In addition, Cleaver Fulton Rankin is enrolled on the Forest Positive Scheme, which has planted 306 trees since November 2022, enabling the firm to plant more trees than it uses in printing.

Kerry McCloy, Innovation and Legal Technology Director at Cleaver Fulton Rankin, comments:

“We are delighted to sign the Greener Litigation Pledge. Being a responsible business and minimising our impact on the environment is of the utmost importance to us. We are committed to taking action to reduce the carbon footprint of our dispute resolution practice and our business more widely. Signing the pledge is a natural step for us following the launch of our Legal Technology Group, which specialises in providing eDiscovery services, and following the many other ESG initiatives we have undertaken. We would like to encourage others to sign the Greener Litigation Pledge and to promote sustainable litigation practices.”
