The annual A&B NI Cultural Governance Conference has been celebrating trustee voices and tackling the big issues for charity boards for over a decade. The event returns this October with a stand-out line-up of speakers who will be championing the unsung heroes of charity boards.

With just one week to go, we’re excited to give you the full rundown of what’s in store at this year’s Cultural Governance Conference. Whether you’ve already registered or are thinking about it, here’s everything you need to know –

What’s Cultural Governance all about?

It’s all about leadership, the power of governance, driving positive change and championing creative missions. Board members are often the unsung heroes of charity boards and Cultural Governance Conference is a brilliant opportunity for trustees and arts leaders to connect, learn and be inspired.

Who’s it for?

This is an unmissable event for charity board members, arts leadership teams or anyone who is curious about becoming a board member. Whether you have years or experience or are just starting out, there’s something for everyone.

What can I expect if I book a ticket for the in-person event?

Join us in person for a half-day session in the stunning surrounds of The Belfast Harbour Office on 3 Oct from 9.00am – 12.30pm.

Kicking things off, A&B NI Award Winner and Open Arts Chair, Margaret Mann, joins A&B NI Board member Stephen McCrystall for an insightful discussion on inclusion and board diversity.

Stephen, a graduate of the A&B NI Young Leaders programme, will share his first-time board experience, while Margaret reflects on her journey from Open Arts participant to Chair. Together, they’ll dive into the role of the Chair, navigating challenges in arts governance, and the importance of making space for every voice.

Next up, we’ll welcome Kathleen Soriano, expert judge from SkyArts’ Portrait and Landscape Artist of the Year, in conversation with Sophie Hayles, CEO of the Crescent Arts Centre. As both experienced arts leaders and board members, they’ll share their unique perspectives on who really runs the board, fostering collaboration, engaging board members, managing risk, and using your networks for success.

This is an in-conversation style event, with opportunities for networking along with hot drinks and delicious scones a plenty. (Scones provided by the wonderful Caoimhe from Café at the Duncairn.)

We’ll also hear from representatives of Belfast Harbour and our conference supporters Harbinson Mulholland.  Thanks also to our principal funder the Arts Council of Northern Ireland who make this event possible each year.

What can I expect if I book an online resources ticket?

Book an online ticket and share the learnings with your wider board.

This is a great value option which allows you to take a deeper dive into topics covered at the in-person session. We’ll share a link which gives you access to 10 online learning videos from experts in their fields covering essential topics for boards, including diversity, fundraising, Impact, finance, cyber security, advocacy and more.

The link can be shared with your board members and watched online from 3 Oct until 2 Dec.
