Event Description

The context

A person’s social background can limit their work opportunities, which is further compounded by factors such as race, gender, age, and location.

Social mobility

refers to changes in a person’s socio-economic situation, either in relation to their parents or throughout their lifetime.

The determinants of social mobility are complex, but businesses in Northern Ireland have a role to play in creating opportunities for all to change their socio-economic situation for the better, and many are already taking action to positively impact their communities, through education.

About this event

This event, delivered in partnership with Derry & Strabane District Council and taking place 10:00 am – 1:00 pm on 18 June at The Guildhall, Derry~Londonderry, will bring together business leaders, educators, and community advocates to explore the role of business in driving social mobility.

With one in four children in Northern Ireland living in poverty, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation highlights the profound impact this has on their educational outcomes and future life chances. Tackling these challenges requires joined-up thinking and collaborative action across sectors. Attendees will gain insight into innovative strategies that can drive social mobility and hear from businesses already taking action and collaborating to create meaningful change in schools, communities and workplaces.

This event is free to attend and open to members and non-members of Business in the Community.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided during networking, both before and after the agenda items.
