NI Chamber comments on NI export figures from HM Revenue and Customs

Commenting on export figures published today by HM Revenue and Customs, Ann McGregor, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said:
“It is encouraging to see Northern Ireland’s goods exports continuing to grow, reflecting some strong performances in key sectors and markets.”
“The figures do however emphasise just how important the wider EU and Republic of Ireland markets are to our exporters. NI Chamber members tell us that the current uncertainty around Brexit and the Executive isn’t helping business growth and confidence here and may explain why our rate of export growth is slower than the rest of the UK.”
“Also, whilst sterling’s devaluation has provided a much needed boost to Northern Ireland’s exports, businesses have also had to deal with rising costs as a result and this has contributed to a very challenging cost environment for doing business here.”
