NI Chamber of Commerce EU Statement
Ann McGregor MBE, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce commented:
“The vast majority of businesses across the UK want to stay in the Single Market, but on the basis of a revised relationship with Europe that promotes trade and competitiveness. It is of critical importance to business that we have access to the European market, but not at any cost. On this basis, the Prime Minister’s determination to negotiate a new settlement for Britain is probably the right course of action. However it is important to consider the implications for Northern Ireland from a trade perspective. For example the Republic of Ireland is our most important export partner and we have a lot to lose. In addition he should also give consideration to ensuring that there is consistency in the interpretation of European directives so that they are in line with their original intention and not as interpreted by lawyers.”
