NI Chamber welcomes consultation on Apprenticeship Levy
Commenting on the announcement of a consultation on the upcoming Apprenticeship Levy, Ann McGregor, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NI Chamber), said:
“NI Chamber members have fundamental concerns about the proposed Apprenticeship Levy and we therefore welcome the consultation which will provide a platform for businesses to formalise these issues.
“NI Chamber organised a briefing event for members earlier this month and from the level of interest it became clear that a lot of businesses have limited awareness or understanding of the implications and potential impact. Those who are aware of it are not clear on how it will operate.
“The system in England is well developed, but the practicalities of the levy from a devolved perspective are unclear. How will businesses access the fund? How will it work for businesses that are multinational and train centrally or businesses that have staff working outside NI? Will the funds received from the levy in Northern Ireland be ring-fenced for apprenticeship/skills funding only?
“We will shortly be holding a briefing for members on the consultation document and providing them with an opportunity to work closely with us in forming our response which will seek answers to these important questions.”
