Company Success Through Great Leadership
The key to leadership was revealed by the Chief Executive of one of Northern Ireland’s most successful companies at an event in Belfast on 14 October 2014.
Janet McCollum, Chief Executive of Moy Park, addressed over 150 members of the Northern Ireland business community at a leadership-focused breakfast hosted by Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NI Chamber) in partnership with Ulster Bank.
The breakfast is the latest in a series of events under NI Chamber’s ‘Growing Something Brilliant’ campaign, an on-going initiative which seeks to showcase the great businesses in Northern Ireland and inspire more businesses to accelerate their growth.
Janet McCollum, who is responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of Moy Park’s business across Europe, shared Moy Park’s success story to delegates at the event in The MAC. Moy Park, owned by Brazil’s Marfrig, is one of the UK’s top 10 food producers, one of Europe’s top poultry producers and is Northern Ireland’s largest private sector company.
Moy Park is headquartered in Portadown and also has operations in Ballymena and Dungannon.
Delivering her address Ms McCollum said:
“At Moy Park, building and leading teams is central to everything we do, underpinned by great passion, commitment and values. The continued growth and transformation of the business is down to these core attributes of leadership, with a real focus on our people and putting the consumer and customer at the heart of what we do.”
Joining Janet was John Armstrong, Owner and Managing Director of Armstrong Medical, based in Coleraine who design, manufacture and sell disposable respiratory products for use in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Units. The company export 90 per cent of its turnover to 70 distributors in 52 different countries. Mr Armstrong spoke about his company’s growth and the challenges and successes it has faced since he founded it 30 years ago.
Also speaking at the event Ann McGregor, Chief Executive of NI Chamber said leadership can dramatically improve growth opportunities for businesses, helping to boost productivity, performance and ultimately profit.
“Effective leaders adopt strategies and techniques which allow their companies to take the lead in a market. There is always a need for quality leadership. We hope that firms will be inspired by the example of Moy Park and Armstrong Medical who have become renowned in international markets.”
Ian Jordan, Director of Corporate Banking, Ulster Bank said:
“At Ulster Bank we work with exceptional business leaders in a large number of successful local companies. We see first-hand how important their leadership skills are in exploiting new opportunities and pushing the boundaries for growth. If we are to build strong, sustainable and globally competitive businesses locally then we need to invest and develop the leadership capacity here at home, that’s why we’re proud to partner with the Chamber to deliver this important series of events.”
