Corporation Tax Statement – March 2013
NI Chamber President: It is not the answer that we wanted; by the same token it is not the answer that we feared
Commenting on today’s announcement that the Prime Minister has postponed any decision on corporation tax in Northern Ireland until after the vote on Scottish Independence, Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce President Mark Nodder said:
“It has been two years since the launch of the ‘Rebalancing the Northern Ireland Economy’ consultation paper and it is extremely disappointing that that there will be no decision made on corporation tax powers until next year.
Although it is not the answer that we wanted, by the same token it is not the answer that we feared. The devolving of corporation tax powers is clearly still on the table even though it would appear that our economic future is being put on hold until the Scottish referendum. The challenge will be ensuring that this is resolved before the next general election.
Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce will be seeking an early meeting with the First and Deputy First Minister to hear precisely what was discussed at today’s meeting with the Prime Minister.
In the meantime, for Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce, it makes our efforts to grow export all the more significant.”
